Sleep Train Charity Golf Classic Raises More Than $650,000 For Current and Former Foster Youth

Oscar-themed fundraiser collects a record-breaking amount to fund extracurricular activities, educational scholarships and to help foster youth gain independent living skills

SACRAMENTO – October 9, 2013 – Sleep Train, the number one mattress retailer on the West Coast, rolled out the red carpet on October 2nd for its seventh annual Charity Golf Classic. This year’s Oscar-themed event raised a record-breaking $650,000 – funds that will provide financial assistance to current and former foster youth for educational scholarships, extracurricular activities, such as summer camps, sports, music lessons, and to assist them in gaining independent living skills. To date, Sleep Train’s Charity Golf Classic has raised over $2.6 million.

The themed event drew in more than 500 participants who dressed as Holly Golightly, Edward Scissorhands, Cleopatra and other favorite Oscar-nominated characters and actors. Participants also played an eighteen-hole golf tournament, entered a costume contest and attended a live dinner auction.

“We look forward to this event each year as a fun way to bring our business community together for an important cause – raising money to ensure current and former foster youth have the same opportunities as their peers,” said Dale Carlsen, CEO and founder of Sleep Train. “Statistics show that by age 18, more than 60% of foster kids have no work experience and one-third end up on welfare. Extracurricular activities, educational scholarships and support to gain independent living skills give foster youth the needed tools to be successful throughout their adult lives.”

Donations raised during the event will go to West Coast foster youth agencies, supporting the following programs:

  • Fostering Scholars at Seattle University – College Education Assistance
  • Foster Family Care Network – Extracurricular Activities
  • PRIDE Industries – Job Skills and Creation
  • San Pasqual Academy – Youth Empowerment Services program
  • Youth Homes – Permanent Housing and Educational Assistance
  • John Burton Foundation – College Educational Assistance

The Sleep Train Charity Golf Classic brought together peers, colleagues and business associates from all over the United States including representatives from Beautyrest, the presenting sponsor, Sealy Mattress Company, Tempur-Pedic®, Leggett & Platt, Serta Mattress Company, Progressive Finance, DSI Delivery and Protect-A-Bed.

Sleep Train is currently hosting its Dollar Drive for Foster Kids through November 3rd, which helps fund fun, healthy and educational activities for California’s foster youth. Donations in all denominations can be made at any Sleep Train location or online.
